Quality Check: Borla ATAK Muffler 3, Ram 1500 Exhaust, and the Tow Bar That Taught Me to Verify Everything
Last week, my desk looked like an aftermarket parts catalog had exploded. On one side sat a Borla ATAK muffler 3, still in its box. On the other side, a returned Polestar 2 tow bar with a top tow hitch adapter that I was pretty sure we shouldn't have accepted. In the middle, a Ram 1500 exhaust Borla system we were about to quote for a fleet customer.
I'm the quality/compliance manager at an aftermarket parts distributor. I review every product before it hits the catalog—roughly 200+ unique items each year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 7% of first deliveries. Not because I enjoy being the bad guy, but because one bad fitment costs more in the long run than a few days of delays.
I've been doing this for four years. Before that, I was the guy installing parts. That's probably why I'm so picky about tolerances.
I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later.
What Landed on My Desk
A local fleet manager asked us to spec exhausts for five Ram 1500s. He towed about 8,000 pounds of equipment every week, so his list of requirements was simple: more presence, less drone, and nothing that sagged under heat. The Ram 1500 exhaust Borla line was at the top of his list.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims like “adds power” have to be truthful and backed by evidence. That's not a marketing suggestion, it's an advertising standard. So before we listed the Ram 1500 exhaust Borla system, I asked for the dyno sheets. The manufacturer provided them. If they hadn't, I would've dropped the part, no matter how good the welds looked.
That's also where the old “louder equals faster” myth breaks down. It was true 20 years ago when exhaust restriction was a bigger bottleneck. Today, ECU tuning and emissions controls matter more. A muffler can change the sound and add a few horsepower, but it won't turn a stock truck into a race truck.
The Polestar 2 Tow Bar Curveball
Same week, different problem. We'd taken an order for a Polestar 2 tow bar, plus a top tow hitch adapter so the customer could use a fold-down bicycle rack. The listing said “fits Polestar 2.” The photo looked right. But our customer's car had the optional tow hitch prep package, which changes the bumper structure slightly. The listing didn't mention that.
We had 48 hours to accept the shipment before installation. Normally, I would test-fit the whole assembly. But there was no Polestar 2 in the shop, and the customer didn't want to move the appointment. So I approved it based on measurements, photos, and a vendor promise.
In hindsight, I should have asked for a 3D scan of the mounting pocket. The installer ended up using shims, and the customer heard a rattle on the first drive. Not enough to make the hitch unsafe, but enough to make the phone ring.
I don't have hard data on how many tow bar returns are caused by adapter mismatch versus poor machining. But based on our return patterns, my sense is that fitment issues show up more than manufacturers admit.
Cargo Mats, Tolerances, and the Top Tow Hitch Adapter
The same customer also wanted an OMAC USA trunk mat cargo liner. That part seemed simple. It's a molded liner, not a structural component. But the first sample didn't sit flat around the rear hatch threshold. The edge curled just enough to look unprofessional. We didn't reject it, but we noted it on the spec sheet. A part can be good enough and still miss customer expectations.
Top tow hitch adapters are another last-minute purchase that deserves more attention. What most people don't realize is that insertion depth and receiver class matter more than the ball size. A two-inch adapter for a class III receiver isn't automatically the same as one for a class II receiver. It's worth measuring before you buy.
What I'd Do Differently
After that week, I updated our vendor checklist. Every new contract now includes fitment tolerance, installation torque specs, and a return reason field. We also stopped listing “universal fit” claims. There's no such thing. That change took time, but it was worth it. In our 2024 customer survey, satisfaction scores tied to fitment expectations went up 34% compared with the previous year.
I wish I had tracked install times as carefully as return reasons. I suspect they'd tell the same story.
If you're buying an exhaust, a tow bar, or even a cargo liner, ask the same questions I do: What's the exact part number? What trim levels have been verified? What tolerance does the manufacturer guarantee? Most people don't ask those questions. But the customers who do are the ones who come back.
So yes, I ended that week with a rejected hanger, a shimmed tow bar, and a cargo liner that was technically okay but not great. But I also ended it with a better checklist. And the next Borla ATAK muffler 3 review will be a little easier because of it.
